How to use Broxol Syrup?
- Broxol syrup can be taken after food to protect the stomach
- The bottle should be shaken well before every dose
- Doses must be spaced at least four hours apart
- Measuring with the supplied cup avoids accidental overdosing
- This syrup should not be used beyond five days without medical review
Contraindications
- Those with a history of allergy to any ingredient in this syrup
- People diagnosed with narrow angle glaucoma or urinary retention
- Avoid in patients taking antidepressants of the MAO inhibitor group
- Not recommended for children below twelve years of age
Drug Interactions
- MAO inhibitor antidepressants: side effects become much stronger
- Alcohol and sleeping pills: drowsiness and slow breathing may follow
- Ciprofloxacin and erythromycin: aminophylline levels rise towards a toxic range
- Rifampicin and carbamazepine: the medicine may stop working properly
- Always tell your doctor about all medicines you are currently taking
Risks and warnings
- Not ambroxol: despite the name, this syrup contains no ambroxol at all
- Narrow safety margin: vomiting, tremor or a racing heart may signal too high a dose
- Glaucoma and prostate problems: symptoms may worsen during treatment
- Heart rhythm problems: palpitations need medical review
- Epilepsy: the seizure threshold may be lowered
- Stomach ulcers: acid production rises and symptoms may worsen
- Other cough medicines: combining them doubles the antihistamine dose
- Driving and machinery: drowsiness makes driving unsafe
