What Experts Say
Buspirone hydrochloride works mainly as a partial agonist at serotonin 5-HT1A receptors in the brain, with an additional mild effect on dopamine D2 receptors. This mechanism is different from benzodiazepines, which act on GABA receptors, and it explains why buspirone produces far less sedation and a much lower risk of physical dependence.
Clinical evidence shows buspirone hydrochloride usually needs one to two weeks of regular use before anxiety symptoms noticeably improve, so it is not useful for sudden panic attacks. Once it takes effect, the drug tends to reduce chronic worry and muscle tension without significantly affecting memory, coordination, or alertness during daily activities.
Compared with benzodiazepines, buspirone hydrochloride carries a lower risk of tolerance and dependence, making it a reasonable choice for longer courses of anxiety treatment. It should never be combined with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and doctors generally recommend consistent daily dosing so the drug can reach steady, effective levels in the blood.
