What Experts Say
Paracetamol works by reducing prostaglandin production in the brain and spinal cord, which lowers pain signals and helps bring down fever. It does not carry the stomach irritation risks associated with NSAIDs like ibuprofen, making it a common first choice for mild to moderate pain.
Caffeine on its own is not a painkiller, but research shows it works as an adjuvant. Adding caffeine to paracetamol increases its analgesic effect by nearly 40 percent compared to paracetamol alone. Caffeine also speeds up gastric emptying, helping paracetamol reach the bloodstream faster for quicker relief.
This combination is particularly useful for headaches linked to fatigue or reduced alertness, since caffeine has a mild stimulant effect too. Doctors generally recommend staying within the maximum daily paracetamol limit of 4 grams to avoid liver strain, especially when other paracetamol containing products are also being used at the same time.
