- Cough suppressants (codeine-based syrups): These reduce mucus clearance and work against the action of carbocisteine.
- Antibiotics (amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline): Carbocisteine may interact with certain antibiotics; inform your doctor before combining treatments.
- Bronchodilators: No direct contraindication, but your doctor should be aware of all respiratory medicines being used together.
Risks and warnings
- Gastrointestinal risk: Carbex syrup can weaken the stomach lining; patients with a history must use it only under medical supervision.
- Active GI bleeding: Stop this medicine immediately and seek medical care if any signs of stomach or intestinal bleeding appear.
- Asthma: Patients with bronchial asthma should use carbocisteine with caution, as it may occasionally trigger bronchospasm.
- Kidney impairment: Dose adjustment may be needed in patients with moderate-to-severe kidney disease.
- Liver disease: Patients with liver conditions should be monitored closely during treatment.
- Diabetes: The syrup formulation contains sucrose; patients with diabetes should discuss safer alternatives with their doctor.
