Cefidon is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It destroys the protective cell wall that bacteria need to survive.
Cefidon Capsule Uses
- Prescribed for urinary tract infections affecting the bladder or kidneys when bacteria are the confirmed cause
- Used to treat throat infections, including pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus bacteria
- Effective for ear infections (otitis media) when a bacterial cause has been identified by a doctor
- Recommended for acute bronchitis and lower respiratory tract infections caused by susceptible bacterial strains
- Used in the treatment of typhoid fever and enteric fever, both of which are common in Pakistan
- Prescribed for uncomplicated gonorrhea caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae in adults
- Targets a broad range of gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria responsible for infections throughout the body

How to use Cefidon Capsule 400mg?
- Cefidon capsule can be taken with or without food
- Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water; do not open, crush, or chew it.
- Take each dose at evenly spaced times to maintain consistent antibiotic levels in the body.
- Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve before the medicine is finished.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to cefixime or any other ingredient in the capsule formulation
- History of severe allergic reaction to penicillin or other cephalosporin antibiotics
- Confirmed Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea is currently being treated
- Patients with severe kidney failure should not take the Cefidon capsule without medical supervision and a confirmed dose adjustment.
Drug Interactions
- Warfarin: Cefidon capsule can increase the blood-thinning effect of warfarin, raising the risk of unusual or prolonged bleeding.
- Carbamazepine: Cefixime may raise carbamazepine levels in the blood, increasing the risk of dizziness, vision disturbances, and seizures.
- Probenecid: This gout medicine reduces the kidneys' ability to clear cefixime, causing it to build up to higher-than-intended levels in the body.
- Furosemide (Lasix): Concurrent use may increase the risk of kidney-related side effects and requires careful monitoring.
- Methotrexate: Cefixime can raise methotrexate levels, increasing the risk of methotrexate toxicity.
- Live bacterial vaccines: Cefidon capsule interferes with the BCG and cholera vaccines; complete any live vaccination before starting this antibiotic.
- Oral contraceptives: Cefidon capsule may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control pills in some patients.
Risks and warnings
- Penicillin allergy: A prior allergic reaction to penicillin raises the risk of a cross-reaction with cefixime; always disclose this before starting treatment.
- Kidney disease: Cefixime is primarily cleared by the kidneys, so patients with impaired kidney function may require a reduced dose and regular monitoring.
- Liver disease: Patients with liver conditions face a higher risk of side effects and should use Cefidon capsule only under medical supervision.
- Prolonged antibiotic use: Extended use of any antibiotic can lead to secondary infections, including fungal overgrowth or C. difficile-associated colitis.
- Diabetes: Cefidon capsule can produce a false-positive result in some urine glucose tests; inform your doctor or laboratory before any testing.
- Blood clotting disorders: Patients with clotting conditions face a higher bleeding risk, especially if warfarin or similar medicines are used alongside Cefidon capsule.
- Immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia: Rare cases of blood-cell destruction have been reported with cefixime; a full blood count may be needed if symptoms of anaemia appear.
- Pregnancy: Cefixime is generally considered safe during pregnancy, but should only be used when clearly needed and confirmed by a doctor.
- Breastfeeding: Cefixime may pass into breast milk; a doctor should review the risks before it is prescribed to a nursing mother.
- Elderly patients: Older adults often have slower kidney clearance and may need a lower dose for safe use.
- Driving and machinery: Dizziness is a possible side effect of the Cefidon capsule; patients who experience it should avoid driving until it passes.
