What Experts Say
Doctors across Pakistan turn to cefpodoxime tablets when a chest infection or urinary infection does not respond to a basic antibiotic. Respiratory infections are common here for much of the year, and this cephalosporin covers many of the bacteria that cause bronchitis and pneumonia in adults.
Cefpodoxime works by blocking an enzyme bacteria need to build their outer cell wall, so the bacteria burst and die. Physicians usually prescribe the 100mg tablet every 12 hours with food, since food improves how much of the drug the body actually absorbs. Skipping doses or stopping early lets the weakest bacteria survive and grow back stronger.
Patients on this tablet are monitored for stomach upset, loose stools and rash, the most frequently reported reactions. People with a history of penicillin allergy need closer monitoring since cross sensitivity between the two antibiotic families is possible, even though it is not universal.
