What Experts Say
Ciprofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It works by blocking two bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, that bacteria need to copy and repair their genetic material. Without them, bacteria stop multiplying and die off. This gives ciprofloxacin activity against a wide range of gram negative organisms behind many urinary, gastrointestinal and respiratory infections.
Cipesta Suspension 250mg/5ml is a higher strength formulation than the 125mg/5ml version. Doctors often choose it for larger or older children who need a bigger effective dose, or for adults who prefer liquid dosing over swallowing tablets. A doubled concentration means a smaller volume delivers the same dose, which many patients find easier to take with meals.
Experts consistently stress that ciprofloxacin should only be used when a bacterial cause is confirmed or strongly suspected, and the full course should always be finished. Stopping early or using it for a viral illness encourages resistant bacteria to develop. Weight based dosing and regular follow up matter most in growing children.

Drug Interactions
- Antacids, Calcium And Iron Supplements: These can bind to ciprofloxacin in the gut and reduce its absorption. Space doses at least two hours apart.
- Theophylline: Ciprofloxacin can raise theophylline blood levels, increasing the risk of nausea, tremors and seizures.
- NSAIDs: Combining with nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs may raise the risk of central nervous system effects, including seizures.
- Probenecid: This drug slows the elimination of ciprofloxacin, which can raise its blood concentration and side effect risk.
- Warfarin: Ciprofloxacin may enhance the blood thinning effect of warfarin, requiring closer monitoring of clotting tests.
Risks and warnings
- Tendon Injury Risk: Ciprofloxacin can rarely cause tendon inflammation or rupture, particularly in the Achilles tendon. Stop use and seek care if pain, swelling or difficulty moving a joint develops.
- Joint And Cartilage Caution In Children: Fluoroquinolones may affect growing cartilage in children. This suspension should only be used in pediatric patients when the treating doctor judges the benefit outweighs this risk.
- Complete The Full Course: Stopping treatment early, even after symptoms improve, raises the risk of relapse and antibiotic resistant bacteria.
- Nervous System Effects: Dizziness, confusion or seizures can occur rarely, especially in patients with a history of seizure disorders.
- Sun Sensitivity: Skin may become more sensitive to sunlight during treatment. Limit prolonged sun exposure and use sunscreen.
