What Experts Say
Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet agent. It works by blocking a receptor on platelets called P2Y12, which stops platelets from clumping together to form clots. This makes it a standard treatment after heart attacks, ischemic strokes, and coronary stent placement, often alongside aspirin as dual antiplatelet therapy.
The 75mg once daily dose is the standard maintenance dose for most adults. A higher loading dose is sometimes used in hospital settings for acute events. Clopidogrel needs liver enzymes to convert it into its active form, and some patients metabolize it less efficiently due to genetic variation, which can affect how well it protects them.
Routine blood tests are not usually required, but patients should tell their doctor about any planned surgery or dental work well in advance, since the drug needs to be paused to reduce bleeding risk. Missing doses can raise clotting risk quickly, especially after a recent stent, so consistent daily use matters as much as the dose itself.
