What Experts Say
Moderate pain that does not fully settle with paracetamol alone is a common complaint in general practice clinics. Codar tablet combines codeine phosphate, a mild opioid, with paracetamol, a well known non opioid pain reliever and fever reducer. Together the two work through separate pathways to control pain more effectively than either alone.
Codeine phosphate is converted by the liver into morphine, which is the step responsible for most of its pain relieving effect. Paracetamol adds a separate, opioid free action that also lowers fever. This pairing has been used in pain management for decades with a well documented safety profile when dosed correctly.
Because codeine is an opioid, this tablet is intended only for short courses under a doctor's guidance. Extended or unsupervised use raises the risk of dependence and slowed breathing. Anyone needing pain relief for more than a few days should return to their doctor for reassessment.

Drug Interactions

- Warfarin: Regular paracetamol use can enhance the blood thinning effect of warfarin over time.
- MAO inhibitors: This combination is generally avoided due to a risk of severe, unpredictable reactions.
- Other paracetamol containing medicines: Combining products raises the risk of accidental paracetamol overdose and liver damage.
Risks and warnings
- Dependence and misuse: Codeine is an opioid, so regular or prolonged use can lead to physical dependence.
- Respiratory depression: High doses or combination with other sedatives can dangerously slow breathing.
- Liver disease: The paracetamol component adds risk in patients with existing liver impairment.
- Children under 12: This tablet is generally avoided in this age group due to opioid related breathing risk.
