What Experts Say
Losartan belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor blockers. It blocks a hormone that narrows blood vessels, allowing them to relax and widen. This lowers blood pressure and reduces the strain on the heart over time.
Doctors commonly start this medicine at a low dose and adjust it based on blood pressure response after a few weeks of use. It is often combined with a diuretic when blood pressure remains high on its own. People with type 2 diabetes and kidney involvement may be prescribed this specifically to slow kidney damage, independent of its blood pressure lowering effect.
Regular blood pressure checks and periodic kidney function and potassium level tests are recommended during treatment, especially in the first few months. This medicine is not suitable during pregnancy, since it can harm a developing baby, so effective contraception is advised for women of childbearing age. Sudden dizziness or fainting after the first dose should be reported to a doctor promptly.
