What Experts Say
Clotrimazole belongs to the imidazole class of antifungal medicines. It works by damaging the cell membrane of Candida albicans, the fungus most commonly responsible for vaginal yeast infections, causing the fungal cell to leak its contents and die off.
A single 500mg vaginal tablet achieves cure rates comparable to older multi-day regimens that use lower daily doses spread across three to seven nights. This one-time dosing improves adherence, since many patients struggle to complete a week-long course of nightly insertions.
Doctors generally advise confirming a candidiasis diagnosis before repeated self-treatment, since itching and discharge can overlap with bacterial vaginosis or other infections that clotrimazole cannot treat. Recurrent episodes often warrant further evaluation for contributing factors such as poorly controlled diabetes or antibiotic use.
