What Experts Say
Physicians in Pakistan often prescribe a combination steroid and antibiotic ointment when eczema or dermatitis becomes infected, since treating inflammation alone will not clear the bacteria. Fluticasone propionate acts as a moderate potency corticosteroid that calms inflammation, while mupirocin targets Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, the organisms behind most secondary skin infections.
Treatment is usually limited to one or two weeks because prolonged corticosteroid use can thin the skin and cause visible blood vessels or stretch marks, especially on the face and skin folds. Physicians typically reassess the skin after this period to confirm the infection has cleared.
Hot, humid weather across much of Pakistan, combined with frequent scratching from untreated eczema, raises the risk of bacterial superinfection in people with chronic dermatitis. A combination product becomes the practical choice once oozing, crusting, or pus point to infection rather than inflammation alone.
