What Experts Say
Doctors in Pakistan prescribe Dicerin Capsule 50mg for knee and hip osteoarthritis when standard painkillers no longer control joint pain well. Diacerein blocks interleukin 1, the chemical signal that speeds up cartilage breakdown, and it spares the stomach lining better than routine NSAIDs.
Treatment usually starts with one capsule daily after dinner for two weeks, then increases to twice daily with meals. This staged approach lets the gut adjust to early loose stools, the most common side effect. Since diacerein works slowly, doctors often add a short course of paracetamol for the first few weeks until cartilage benefits appear around four to six weeks in.
Liver function tests are checked periodically during treatment because rare but serious liver injury has been linked to prolonged diacerein use. It is avoided in pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, and significant kidney or liver disease, and patients are told to stop and seek review if persistent diarrhea or yellowing of the skin or eyes develops.
