Alendronate belongs to a class of medicines called bisphosphonates. It binds tightly to bone surfaces and slows down osteoclasts, the cells responsible for breaking down old bone tissue. This mechanism helps preserve bone mineral density and reduces the rate of bone turnover over months of therapy. Healthy bone constantly renews itself through a balance between resorption and formation. In osteoporosis this balance tips toward excessive breakdown, leaving bone porous and prone to fracture. By slowing resorption, Alendronate allows natural bone building processes to gradually restore lost density, particularly at the spine and hip. Cholecalciferol, or Vitamin D3, is included because calcium absorption in the intestine depends heavily on adequate Vitamin D status. Low Vitamin D levels can blunt the benefit of bone sparing therapy even when dosing is correct.
