What Experts Say
Clindamycin phosphate is converted to active clindamycin in the skin, where it stops bacterial protein synthesis and reduces the population of Cutibacterium acnes living inside clogged follicles. This lowers the inflammatory triggers that turn a blocked pore into a red, swollen lesion.
Benzoyl peroxide works differently, releasing oxygen radicals that are directly toxic to acne causing bacteria and also loosening the buildup of dead skin cells inside the follicle. Because bacteria cannot develop resistance to this oxidative action, pairing it with clindamycin protects the antibiotic's long term effectiveness.
Combining both ingredients in a single gel addresses inflammation and comedone formation at the same time, which is why fixed dose combinations often outperform either agent used alone in clinical comparisons. Consistent daily application over several weeks is typically needed before full benefit becomes visible.
