What Experts Say
Cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride is structurally related to tricyclic antidepressants and acts mainly within the central nervous system rather than at the muscle itself. It reduces tonic somatic motor activity at the brainstem level by influencing both gamma and alpha motor neuron activity. This central action explains why it relieves muscle spasm without directly affecting muscle fiber contraction.
Clinical evidence supports short term use for acute musculoskeletal spasm, typically for two to three weeks alongside rest and physical therapy. Efficacy beyond this period has not been established in controlled trials, and the drug does not treat spasticity caused by cerebral palsy or spinal cord disease. Symptom relief is usually noticeable within the first few days of therapy.
The anticholinergic and sedative profile of cyclobenzaprine requires caution in older adults and patients with cardiac conduction abnormalities. Concurrent use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors is contraindicated due to the risk of hyperpyretic crisis and seizures. Clinicians generally advise avoiding alcohol and other central nervous system depressants during treatment.
