About Engerix-B Injection 10mcg / 5ml

Engerix-B Injection 10mcg / 5ml is a recombinant Hepatitis B vaccine that prevents Hepatitis B virus infection.

Engerix-B Injection 10mcg / 5ml Uses

  • Prevention of Hepatitis B virus infection in infants, children and adolescents up to 15 years of age
  • Pre exposure immunization for people at higher risk of Hepatitis B exposure, including healthcare workers and household contacts of an infected person
  • Routine immunization as part of Pakistan's national immunization schedule
  • Post exposure protection when combined with Hepatitis B immunoglobulin after a needlestick injury or birth exposure

Engerix-B Injection 10mcg / 5ml Benefits

  • Builds long term immunity against Hepatitis B, a virus that can cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and liver cancer
  • Supplied as a multi dose vial, making it a practical and economical choice for hospitals, clinics and vaccination camps immunizing many children in one session
  • Produces a strong antibody response after completion of the full three dose schedule in the vast majority of healthy children
  • Reduces the risk of household and close contact transmission of Hepatitis B, a common route of infection in Pakistan

What Experts Say

Pediatricians consider Hepatitis B vaccination one of the most effective ways to prevent chronic liver disease, since a large share of chronic cases in Pakistan trace back to unsafe injections and mother to child transmission. Doctors recommend starting the primary series early in infancy, since younger children who acquire Hepatitis B are far more likely to develop chronic infection than adults.

The 5ml multi dose vial format is favoured in busy immunization settings because it lowers the cost per dose compared with individual syringes, without changing how well the vaccine works. Physicians stress that a fresh sterile needle and syringe must be used for every withdrawal, since a multi dose vial carries a higher contamination risk if aseptic technique slips even once.

Doctors also monitor antibody response more closely in certain groups, including people on dialysis, those with obesity and older adults, since these factors can blunt the immune response. Physicians may check post vaccination antibody levels and consider a booster dose if protective immunity is not reached after the standard three dose schedule.

How to use Engerix-B Injection 10mcg / 5ml?

  • Administer by intramuscular injection into the anterolateral thigh in infants or the deltoid muscle in older children, never into the buttock
  • Give as a three dose primary series at 0, 1 and 6 months of age, following Pakistan's routine immunization schedule
  • Each single dose drawn from this 5ml multi dose vial equals 0.5ml (10mcg), the same as one dose from the single dose presentation
  • Shake the vial gently before every withdrawal since the vaccine settles as a fine white precipitate on standing
  • Withdraw each dose with a fresh sterile needle and syringe, and never reinsert a used needle into the vial
  • Keep the opened vial refrigerated between uses and discard it once the maximum in use period or vial integrity is compromised
  • Complete the full three dose series even if a dose is delayed, since restarting the entire series is not required

Drug Interactions

  • Immunosuppressive Medicines: Corticosteroids or other immune suppressing drugs can lower the antibody response to this vaccine.
  • Other Injectable Vaccines: Engerix-B can be given at the same visit as other routine vaccines at a separate injection site, since giving multiple vaccines together does not reduce the immune response to either.
  • Hepatitis B Immunoglobulin: Can be given at the same time at a different injection site without reducing the vaccine's effect, a combination genuinely used for post exposure protection.

Risks and warnings

  • Anaphylaxis Risk: Seek emergency care right away if swelling, breathing difficulty or a severe rash develops after a dose.
  • Yeast Allergy: Avoid this vaccine if there is a known severe allergic reaction to baker's yeast, since Engerix-B is produced in yeast cells.
  • Multi Dose Vial Handling: A multi dose vial carries a higher contamination risk than a single dose syringe if strict aseptic technique is not followed for every withdrawal.
  • Bleeding Disorders: Use caution and apply firm pressure at the injection site in people with a bleeding tendency or on blood thinners.
  • Acute Illness: Postpone vaccination during a moderate to severe acute illness until recovery.
  • Immunocompromised Patients: A weaker antibody response can occur in patients on dialysis or with a compromised immune system, and extra doses may be advised by the treating doctor.

Engerix-B Injection 10mcg / 5ml Side Effects

  • Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site
  • Mild fever
  • Fatigue or irritability, especially in infants
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Rare allergic reactions such as rash or hives

Storage Conditions

  • Store the vial in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C at all times, never in the freezer
  • Discard the vaccine if it has ever been frozen, since freezing destroys its effectiveness
  • Keep the vial in its original carton to protect it from light
  • Refrigerate the opened multi dose vial between uses and use it within the manufacturer's specified in use period
  • Do not use the vaccine beyond its printed expiry date
  • Transport the vaccine in a proper cold chain box or vaccine carrier during transit, especially in hot weather
