What Experts Say
Esomeprazole is the S isomer of omeprazole and works by blocking the H+/K+ ATPase pump in the stomach lining, cutting acid output at its source. Doctors typically prescribe the 40mg capsule once daily before breakfast, since food timing affects how well the drug controls acid production through the day and night.
Acid reflux and peptic ulcer disease are among the most common digestive complaints seen by physicians across Pakistan, largely linked to spicy diets, irregular meal timing, high stress levels and frequent H. pylori infection. Proton pump inhibitors like esomeprazole remain a first line option for these patients and are often paired with antibiotics when infection is confirmed.
Physicians recommend using the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration needed, since prolonged use is linked to reduced calcium and vitamin B12 absorption and a slightly higher fracture risk in older adults. Regular follow up helps confirm the medicine is still needed and working as intended before treatment is extended further.
