What Experts Say
Esomeprazole belongs to the proton pump inhibitor class of drugs. It blocks the hydrogen potassium ATPase enzyme found in the stomach lining. This action reduces acid output more completely than older H2 blocker medicines. The 20mg strength is the standard maintenance dose for most reflux patients.
Doctors usually prescribe this dose once daily before breakfast for four to eight weeks in GERD. Longer courses may follow in patients with severe esophagitis or a history of ulcer bleeding. Acid suppression allows damaged esophageal tissue to heal properly over this period.
Physicians monitor patients on extended courses for magnesium and vitamin B12 levels. Pakistan carries a heavy burden of acid related digestive disorders linked to spicy diets and irregular meal timing. Gastroenterologists recommend the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration needed to control symptoms. A step down to an as needed schedule is often possible once initial healing is confirmed on follow up review.
