How to use Esorid capsule 20mg?
- Adults usually take one 20mg capsule once daily, roughly an hour before breakfast.
- The capsule needs a whole swallow with water. Chewing or crushing breaks the coating.
- Patients with swallowing trouble can open the capsule and sprinkle the pellets on a spoon of yogurt, then swallow right away without chewing.
- A full course for ulcer healing generally runs four to eight weeks, based on the prescribing doctor's plan.
- Missed doses should not be doubled up. The next dose simply resumes at the usual time.
Drug Interactions
- Clopidogrel: Esomeprazole can blunt the blood thinning effect of clopidogrel, a concern for Pakistani cardiac patients on dual therapy after a stent.
- Warfarin: Combined use can raise bleeding risk and needs closer INR monitoring.
- Methotrexate: High dose methotrexate levels can rise when taken alongside this medicine.
- Diazepam: Esomeprazole slows the clearance of diazepam, which can prolong its sedative effect.
- Atazanavir and Certain HIV Medicines: Stomach acid reduction lowers absorption of these drugs.
- Digoxin: Absorption of digoxin may increase, raising the chance of toxicity.
- Iron Supplements: Lower stomach acid reduces iron absorption, relevant for the many Pakistani women already managing iron deficiency anemia.
Risks and warnings
- Kidney or Liver Disease: Patients with reduced kidney or liver function need a doctor reviewed dose before starting this medicine.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Esomeprazole use during pregnancy needs a doctor's clearance, since Pakistani obstetric guidance favors the lowest effective dose.
- Long Term Use: Use beyond one year raises the chance of bone thinning, low magnesium and vitamin B12 deficiency.
- Masking Serious Illness: Persistent stomach pain, unexplained weight loss or black stools need urgent evaluation, since this medicine can hide warning signs of a deeper problem.
- Kidney Inflammation: A rare condition called acute interstitial nephritis has been linked to PPI use and needs immediate medical attention if fever with reduced urination occurs.
