What Experts Say
Ofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics and works by blocking bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes bacteria need to replicate their genetic material. This bactericidal action gives it broad coverage against common eye pathogens, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Haemophilus, and Pseudomonas species.
Eye specialists often prefer a 0.3% ofloxacin drop for moderate to severe bacterial conjunctivitis and for corneal ulcers, since it penetrates ocular tissue quickly and reaches effective concentrations within the tear film. Treatment courses are usually kept short, around seven to nine days, to reduce the chance of resistant bacteria developing.
Doctors generally advise against self-starting antibiotic eye drops without an exam, since viral conjunctivitis and allergic eye irritation look similar to bacterial infection but do not respond to antibiotics. A proper diagnosis helps avoid unnecessary antibiotic exposure while ensuring true bacterial infections are treated promptly and fully.
