What Experts Say

Eyfem N combines fluorometholone, a mild corticosteroid, with neomycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic. The steroid calms inflammation, while the antibiotic stops susceptible bacteria from growing. It is a prescription only product because the wrong eye drop can damage vision.

Fluorometholone is chosen for eye use because it is less likely than stronger steroids to raise eye pressure, although this can still happen. Neomycin works only on bacteria, not on viruses or fungi. Do not restart leftover drops for a new red eye without checking first, since the cause may be viral.

Because a steroid can hide or worsen some infections, this product needs an eye doctor's diagnosis. Courses are kept short, and eye pressure is checked if drops are needed for more than a week or two. Follow up promptly if pain, light sensitivity or reduced vision appears. Never share the bottle with family members, and discard it after the advised period.

How to use Eyfem N drops 0.1% / 0.35%?

• Use Eyfem N only as prescribed by your eye doctor, usually 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye several times daily.
• Wash your hands first and avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye.
• Wait at least 5 minutes before using any other eye drop.
• Complete the prescribed course and return for review as advised.

Drug Interactions

• Other eye drops: Applying them together can wash out the medicine, so wait at least 5 minutes between drops.
• Other steroids or aminoglycoside antibiotics: Absorption from the eye is low, but combined use adds to the risk of side effects, so tell your doctor about all medicines.

Risks and warnings

• Viral and fungal infections: Do not use in herpes, other viral, fungal or tuberculous eye infections, as the steroid can worsen them.
• Eye pressure and cataract: Prolonged use can raise eye pressure and contribute to cataract. Eye pressure checks are needed with longer courses.
• Allergy: Neomycin can cause skin or eye allergy. Stop and seek advice if swelling or itching occurs.
• Contact lenses: Do not wear contact lenses during treatment unless your doctor allows it.
