What Experts Say
Lactobacillus reuteri is a naturally occurring gut bacterium studied in pediatric populations for gastrointestinal comfort. Clinical research shows it can reduce daily crying time in colicky, breastfed infants when given consistently. Experts believe the strain works by balancing gut flora and lowering gas producing bacteria in the developing digestive tract.
In diarrhea management, this probiotic strain may shorten the duration of loose stools by competing with harmful organisms for space and nutrients in the gut lining. This same mechanism supports its use alongside antibiotics, since antibiotic therapy often disrupts natural bacterial balance and lets opportunistic organisms grow.
Pediatric experts generally consider probiotic drops safe for healthy infants at recommended doses, though supervision is advised for premature babies or those with weak immunity. Current evidence supports short term use for colic, mild constipation and diarrhea related discomfort in early childhood.
