What Experts Say

Fluorometholone is a synthetic corticosteroid with lower corneal penetration than dexamethasone or prednisolone, which makes it a preferred first choice when ophthalmologists want anti inflammatory action with a gentler effect on intraocular pressure.

Physicians recommend tapering the dose gradually rather than stopping abruptly, since sudden withdrawal after prolonged use can cause rebound inflammation in sensitive patients. Dosing frequency is usually reduced in a stepwise manner once the inflamed eye shows clear improvement, and clinicians reassess eye pressure at each taper step.

Pakistan carries a high burden of allergic conjunctivitis linked to seasonal dust, pollen and air pollution exposure, and doctors across Pakistan often pair fluorometholone with regular intraocular pressure checks in patients needing more than two weeks of therapy, particularly those with a family history of glaucoma or prior steroid response.

  • Wait at least five minutes before using any other eye drop
  • Use strictly for the duration advised by the eye specialist

Drug Interactions

  • Other ophthalmic steroids: Combined use raises the risk of elevated eye pressure.
  • NSAID eye drops: Concurrent use may increase the chance of corneal healing problems.
  • Live or attenuated ocular vaccines: Corticosteroid drops may blunt the local immune response.
  • Anticholinergic eye medicines: May compound pressure related side effects when used together.
  • Other topical eye drops: Using multiple drops too close together can dilute effectiveness and needs spacing of several minutes.

Risks and warnings

  • Raised eye pressure: Prolonged use can increase intraocular pressure and may lead to glaucoma in susceptible individuals.
  • Delayed wound healing: Steroid use can slow healing after eye injury or surgery.
  • Masking infection: The drug can suppress symptoms of an underlying eye infection while allowing it to progress.
  • Cataract risk: Long term use is linked with posterior subcapsular cataract formation.
  • Viral eye disease caution: Should not be used in active herpes simplex keratitis without specialist supervision.
  • Fungal infection risk: Extended corticosteroid use may encourage fungal infection of the cornea.
  • Not for unsupervised long term use: Regular eye pressure and lens checks are needed beyond ten days of therapy.
  • Contact lens use: Lenses should be removed before application and reinserted only after the advised waiting period.
