• Avoid taking with tea, coffee or milk, which reduce iron absorption.
• Continue for the period your doctor recommends to rebuild iron stores.

Drug Interactions

Iron binds several medicines and nutrients, affecting their absorption.

• Thyroid medicine levothyroxine: Iron reduces its absorption; separate by four hours.
• Certain antibiotics: Tetracyclines and quinolones bind iron; space the doses apart.
• Antacids and calcium: Reduce iron absorption when taken together.
• Tea and coffee: Tannins lower iron uptake, so avoid around dosing.

Risks and warnings

• Overdose in children: Iron can be dangerous in overdose; keep well away from children.
