What Experts Say
Finasteride blocks the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. Scalp follicles that are genetically sensitive to DHT shrink over time in a process called miniaturization. Lowering DHT slows this shrinkage and lets some follicles recover.
Dermatologists prescribe finasteride 1mg for men with early to moderate pattern hair loss, usually after ruling out other causes such as thyroid problems or iron deficiency. Results take three to four months to appear, and stopping the tablet reverses the benefit within a year. It is never prescribed for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
In hot, humid climates common across the region, men often blame hair fall on water quality or a shampoo brand and try oils and supplements before seeing a doctor. Buying finasteride without a prescription is common, which raises the risk of missing an underlying cause or ignoring rare mood related side effects. A dermatology visit before starting therapy remains the safer route.

Drug Interactions
- Other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors: Combining finasteride with dutasteride is unnecessary and increases the chance of side effects without added benefit.
- CYP3A4 inhibitors: Strong inhibitors such as ketoconazole or ritonavir can raise finasteride blood levels, though clinically significant interactions are uncommon.
- Alcohol: Heavy alcohol use does not directly interact with finasteride but can worsen sexual side effects some men already experience.
Risks and warnings
- Pregnancy risk: Finasteride can cause birth defects in a male fetus, so pregnant women should never handle broken or crushed tablets.
- Sexual side effects: A small number of men report reduced libido or erectile difficulty, which usually resolves after stopping the drug.
- Mood changes: Rare reports link finasteride to low mood or anxiety, so any new emotional changes should be discussed with a doctor.
- PSA test interference: Finasteride lowers PSA blood test readings, so men should tell their doctor they are taking it before any prostate screening.
- Not for women or children: The tablet is approved for adult men only and is not intended for female pattern hair loss.
