Flucin cream contains fluocinolone acetonide, a topical corticosteroid of moderate strength. It reduces the skin's inflammatory response, which eases itch, redness and swelling. It is commonly used in short courses and then reduced as the skin settles. Itching often eases within a day or two of regular use.

Dermatologists prescribe it for eczema, dermatitis and some psoriasis patches on the body. It controls flare-ups but does not cure the condition. Keeping the skin moisturized with an emollient helps flares stay away longer. Doctors usually limit continuous use to about two weeks on the body.

Drug Interactions

• Other topical corticosteroids: Using two steroid products on the same area increases absorption and side effects.
• Other creams on the same area: Apply other skin products at a different time, as they may change how much steroid is absorbed.

Risks and warnings

• Skin thinning: Long or heavy use can thin the skin, cause stretch marks and make small blood vessels visible.
• Infected skin: Not for untreated bacterial, fungal or viral skin infections, as steroids can make them worse.
• Face and skin folds: Avoid the face, groin and underarms unless a doctor advises, since absorption is higher there.
• Children: Children absorb more through the skin, so use only for short periods under medical advice.
