What Experts Say
Rosuvastatin works by blocking HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol. This lowers internal cholesterol production and pushes liver cells to pull more LDL particles out of the bloodstream through increased receptor activity. The result is a measurable drop in bad cholesterol within a few weeks of steady use.
Large clinical trials show rosuvastatin lowers LDL cholesterol more effectively per milligram than several older statins. Outcome studies link consistent use with fewer heart attacks, strokes, and major cardiac events in people with elevated cholesterol or existing vascular risk factors. Its long half-life supports once-daily dosing and steady round-the-clock control.
Dosing needs vary by patient. People of South Asian background often show higher rosuvastatin blood levels at standard doses, so doctors frequently start treatment at a lower dose. Kidney function, liver health, age, and concurrent medicines all influence the safest starting dose and how closely monitoring should be done.
