What Experts Say

Propofol is a short acting intravenous anesthetic. It enhances the effect of GABA, a calming chemical in the brain, which leads to loss of consciousness. It has no pain relieving effect, so it is often combined with opioids during surgery.

After an injection, sleep begins within about 30 to 60 seconds. The drug quickly spreads out of the brain into other tissues, so recovery is fast. Fresofol contains lipid particles, which makes the emulsion milky white. Patients are monitored until fully awake.

It can lower blood pressure and slow or stop breathing, so it must only be given by trained anesthesia providers with monitoring and airway equipment ready. It is never for home or unsupervised use. Anesthesia teams count the fasting time and check allergies before using it. Patients are asked about allergies, dental work and past reactions to anesthesia. How to use Fresofol injection?

Drug Interactions

• Opioid pain medicines: Together they increase breathing depression and low blood pressure.
• Benzodiazepines and other sedatives: They add to sedation, so doses are reduced.
• Blood pressure medicines: They can add to the fall in blood pressure during anesthesia.

Risks and warnings

• Low blood pressure and slow breathing: Heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels are watched continuously.
• Allergy: May contain soybean oil and egg lecithin, so tell the team about egg, soy or peanut allergy.
• Injection site pain: Pain or burning at the vein can occur during injection.
• Prolonged use: Very long infusions at high doses carry a risk of serious metabolic problems.
