What Experts Say
Furosemide is a loop diuretic that acts on the kidneys to remove extra salt and water through urine. Given by injection, it starts working in about 5 minutes. It is a standard emergency treatment for fluid in the lungs. It is commonly used in hospitals across Pakistan for emergency care.
Because it removes salt and water quickly, potassium, sodium and fluid levels must be watched. Blood tests and blood pressure checks are routine during treatment. Doses are adjusted to the patient's weight, kidney function and response. Patients on long treatment may also need a daily weight check.
This injection should be given only by a doctor, nurse or trained health worker. Rapid injection can damage hearing, so it is given slowly. Patients may need potassium supplements or a diet advised by the doctor. Patients should report dizziness, hearing changes or very low urine output at once.
