Galza Tablet Uses

• Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus along with diet and exercise.

What Experts Say

Vildagliptin blocks the enzyme DPP-4, which breaks down natural gut hormones called incretins. Higher incretin levels make the pancreas release insulin when sugar is high and reduce the sugar released by the liver. This glucose dependent action keeps the risk of dangerously low sugar small. It is usually well tolerated by older adults too.

It is used widely in Pakistan, often with metformin, because many patients need two medicines to reach their HbA1c target. Doctors usually check liver tests before starting and during the first year, since rare liver enzyme rises have been reported. Regular HbA1c testing every three months shows how well it works.

How to use Galza Tablet 50mg?

• Adults: 50 mg once or twice daily as prescribed, with or without food.
• With a sulfonylurea: 50 mg once daily in the morning is usual.
• Do not take more than 100 mg in a day.
• Swallow whole with water and take at the same times each day.
• Kidney or liver problems may need a different dose, so follow the doctor's advice.

Drug Interactions

• Sulfonylureas and insulin: They raise the chance of low blood sugar, so lower doses may be needed.
• ACE inhibitors: Together they may raise the risk of swelling of the face and throat (angioedema).
• Corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics: They can raise blood sugar and weaken the effect.
• Alcohol: It can disturb sugar control and strain the liver.

Risks and warnings

• Liver problems: Liver tests are advised before treatment and regularly in the first year.
• Pancreatitis: Severe stomach pain that spreads to the back needs urgent care and the medicine must be stopped.
• Type 1 diabetes: It is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
• Heart failure: It is not advised in serious heart failure.
• Low blood sugar: Risk rises when combined with a sulfonylurea or insulin.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: It is generally not recommended, so speak to a doctor first.
