What Experts Say
Gabapentin calms overactive nerve signals by binding to calcium channels in the brain and spinal cord. This reduces the abnormal electrical activity that causes seizures and dampens the pain signals sent by damaged nerves. It does not act on opioid receptors, so it carries a much lower risk of dependence than opioid painkillers when taken as prescribed.
Doctors in Pakistan usually start patients on a low dose, often 100mg once or twice daily, then raise it gradually over one to two weeks. This slow approach limits drowsiness and dizziness, the most common early side effects. Gabapentin is cleared through the kidneys, so the dose is adjusted downward for patients with reduced kidney function, a point clinicians check carefully in older adults.
Gaptin should never be stopped suddenly. Abrupt withdrawal can trigger rebound anxiety, insomnia, or in epilepsy patients, a return of seizures. Any dose change should be made gradually and under medical supervision.

- Antacids: Aluminum or magnesium based antacids reduce gabapentin absorption, so doses should be spaced at least two hours apart.
- Sedatives And Alcohol: Using Gaptin with alcohol, sleeping pills, or anti anxiety medicines increases sedation and dizziness.
- Other Antiepileptic Drugs: Combining with other seizure medicines may increase side effects like drowsiness and requires careful dose monitoring.
Risks and warnings
- Drowsiness: Gaptin can cause significant sleepiness and dizziness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
- Kidney Function: Patients with kidney disease need a lower dose, since gabapentin is removed from the body mainly through the kidneys.
- Mood Changes: Some patients experience mood swings, agitation, or suicidal thoughts, so any unusual behavior should be reported to a doctor immediately.
- Pregnancy And Breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed and prescribed, since safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not fully established.
