What Experts Say
Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that works by stopping bacteria from producing the proteins they need to grow and multiply. As a topical cream, it acts directly at the site of infection rather than through the bloodstream. Dermatologists commonly recommend it for mild to moderate bacterial skin infections that have not spread into deeper tissue.
Doctors usually advise applying a thin layer to the affected area two to three times a day after gently cleaning the skin. Most patients notice reduced redness and swelling within a few days, though the full course should be completed even if symptoms improve early. Stopping treatment too soon can allow surviving bacteria to cause a relapse.
Experts caution that gentamicin cream should not be used on large areas of broken skin, since more of the drug can be absorbed into the body and raise the risk of kidney or hearing related side effects. It should also be avoided on open wounds without medical advice, and any worsening of symptoms should prompt a doctor visit rather than continued self treatment.
