What Experts Say
Terazosin belongs to the alpha-1 adrenergic blocker class. It works by relaxing smooth muscle in the walls of blood vessels and in the bladder neck and prostate capsule. This dual action lowers systemic blood pressure and reduces resistance to urine flow in men with an enlarged prostate.
Clinical trials support terazosin for both hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia, though a gradual dose titration starting at 1mg is standard because of a well documented first dose hypotensive effect. Symptom improvement in urinary flow typically becomes noticeable within two to four weeks of consistent use.
Because terazosin lowers blood pressure independent of the condition being treated, clinicians monitor for orthostatic symptoms, particularly in older adults or those on other antihypertensive agents. Long term safety data support continued use when blood pressure and urinary symptoms are reassessed periodically by a physician.
