Ikodil Tablet 10mg Uses
- Prevention of chronic stable angina (chest pain) episodes
- Long term management of coronary artery disease symptoms
- Reducing the frequency of angina attacks alongside other heart medicines
- Improving exercise tolerance in people with angina
Drug Class
- Potassium channel activator (vasodilator with nitrate like action)
What Experts Say
Nicorandil is recognized as a dual action anti anginal agent. It opens potassium channels in vascular smooth muscle and also carries a nitrate like effect on blood vessels. This combination relaxes both arteries and veins, lowering the heart's workload and improving blood flow to the heart muscle itself.
Clinical guidelines position nicorandil as an alternative or add on option when standard anti anginal drugs, such as beta blockers or calcium channel blockers, do not fully control symptoms or cannot be tolerated. Studies have also examined its potential protective effect on heart tissue during ischemic episodes, though this remains secondary to its core role in angina prevention.
Physicians generally advise patients to take this medicine consistently rather than only during chest pain, since it works best as a preventive therapy. Regular follow up helps track blood pressure response and headache tolerance, which are common early on and often ease as the body adjusts to treatment.
