What Experts Say
Indomethacin is a potent non steroidal anti inflammatory drug from the indole acetic acid group. It blocks both cyclooxygenase 1 and cyclooxygenase 2 enzymes, which lowers prostaglandin production and reduces pain, swelling and fever at the site of inflammation. Its anti inflammatory action is generally stronger than that of common NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, which is why it works well for acute inflammatory flares.
Because it is more potent and carries a higher rate of gastrointestinal and central nervous system side effects than many common NSAIDs, doctors usually reserve it for acute gout, ankylosing spondylitis, bursitis and inflammatory arthritis rather than mild everyday pain. Clinical guidance recommends the lowest effective dose for the shortest time to limit stomach and kidney related side effects.
Regular users, especially older adults and those with existing heart or kidney disease, benefit from periodic kidney function and blood pressure checks during treatment. Avoiding it alongside other NSAIDs, corticosteroids or anticoagulants meaningfully reduces the risk of stomach bleeding.
