What Experts Say
Ceftazidime belongs to the third generation cephalosporin family and works by binding to penicillin binding proteins on the bacterial cell wall. This action blocks cell wall synthesis and causes the bacteria to rupture and die. Its molecular structure gives it strong activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium that resists many other antibiotics.
Pharmacologists note that ceftazidime is eliminated largely unchanged through the kidneys, so the dose must be adjusted in patients with reduced kidney function. Clinicians often start this injection empirically in seriously ill hospitalized patients before culture results return, then narrow therapy once the exact organism and its sensitivity pattern are confirmed.
Experts caution that patients with a known penicillin allergy may also react to cephalosporins because of a shared beta lactam ring structure. High doses in patients with poor kidney function have been linked to seizures, so dosing is carefully calculated by body weight and renal function to keep therapy both effective and safe.

Drug Interactions
- Aminoglycosides: Combined use with drugs such as gentamicin raises the risk of kidney damage and requires kidney function monitoring.
- Furosemide: This and other loop diuretics can add to the kidney toxicity risk when used alongside ceftazidime.
- Warfarin: Ceftazidime may enhance the blood thinning effect, so clotting levels should be checked more closely during treatment.
- Probenecid: This medicine can raise ceftazidime blood levels by slowing its removal through the kidneys.
Risks and warnings
- Allergic Reaction: Stop use and seek emergency care if rash, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing occurs after the injection.
- Kidney Impairment: Dose adjustment is required in patients with reduced kidney function to avoid drug accumulation and toxicity.
- Seizure Risk: High doses in patients with kidney impairment have been linked to confusion, tremors, and seizures.
- Superinfection: Prolonged use may allow overgrowth of resistant bacteria or fungi, including Clostridioides difficile associated diarrhea.
- Pregnancy And Breastfeeding: Use only if the treating doctor considers it clearly necessary, since ceftazidime crosses into breast milk in small amounts.
