What Experts Say
Atorvastatin belongs to the statin family and works by blocking an enzyme in the liver called HMG-CoA reductase. This enzyme is needed to produce cholesterol, so limiting its activity lowers the amount of LDL cholesterol circulating in the blood. Doctors consider statins a first line treatment for most people with high cholesterol because long term research links them to lower rates of heart attack and stroke.
Ezetimibe works differently. It reduces the absorption of cholesterol from food and bile in the small intestine, so less cholesterol reaches the bloodstream in the first place. When combined with a statin, this dual action often lowers LDL cholesterol further than either medicine alone, which is why fixed dose combinations like this one are prescribed when a single agent does not bring cholesterol to target.
Guidelines still stress that medicine works best alongside a low fat diet, regular activity, and weight management. Doctors typically check liver function and lipid levels before starting treatment and periodically afterward, since statins can occasionally affect liver enzymes or cause muscle discomfort that needs review.
