What Experts Say
Clarithromycin belongs to the macrolide group of antibiotics and works by stopping bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow and multiply. This slows the infection down and allows the immune system to clear it fully. Doctors often prescribe it as a first choice when penicillin allergy rules out more common antibiotics.
Experts highlight that clarithromycin can interact with several other medicines, including certain cholesterol drugs and heart rhythm medications, so a full medical history should be shared before starting treatment. Completing the entire course, usually seven to fourteen days, is important even if symptoms improve early, since stopping too soon can allow resistant bacteria to survive.
Mild stomach upset and a temporary metallic taste are common and usually manageable. Specialists advise reporting any signs of severe diarrhea, irregular heartbeat or liver problems promptly, since these are rare but serious reactions that need urgent medical attention.
