What Experts Say
Dexamethasone belongs to the corticosteroid class of medicines. It suppresses the release of inflammatory chemicals in the skin, including prostaglandins and cytokines. This reduces redness, swelling, and itching linked to inflamed skin conditions. Dermatologists prescribe topical corticosteroids for short courses because prolonged use can thin the skin.
Neomycin sulphate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that stops bacterial protein synthesis. It targets a wide range of gram positive and gram negative organisms found on infected skin lesions. When bacteria contribute to an inflamed rash, an antibiotic alone cannot resolve the swelling, which is why a combination product often works better.
Combining a corticosteroid with an antibiotic addresses two causes of skin injury at once, controlling microbial growth and the immune response driving inflammation. This approach is standard in dermatology for infected eczema and similar conditions. Clinical guidance recommends limiting use to the shortest effective period, since neomycin can cause contact sensitization.

- Other Topical Antibiotics: Using with other aminoglycoside products on broad areas may add to the risk of local sensitization.
- Occlusive Dressings: Covering the treated area with airtight dressings increases absorption and interaction risk.

- Eye Contact: Avoid contact with eyes, as it may raise the risk of glaucoma or cataracts with repeated exposure.
- Large Areas: Applying over large body surfaces or broken skin can increase systemic absorption of both ingredients.
- Fungal Infections: Not effective for fungal skin infections and may worsen them if misused.
