What Experts Say
Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that blocks bacterial protein synthesis, which stops bacteria from multiplying long enough for the body's own defenses to clear the infection. Physicians commonly prescribe this tablet for adults with respiratory tract and skin infections.
The standard adult course usually runs seven to fourteen days depending on the infection being treated. Doctors advise finishing the entire course even after symptoms settle within a few days, since incomplete courses are a recognized driver of resistance among common respiratory bacteria.
Because clarithromycin can interact with several heart, cholesterol and blood thinning medicines, doctors review a patient's full medicine list before prescribing it, particularly in older adults or those with existing heart rhythm problems. Liver function may also be checked during longer treatment courses. Patients with a known allergy to any macrolide antibiotic are usually switched to an alternative class rather than started on this tablet.
