What Experts Say
Lacosamide selectively enhances slow inactivation of voltage-gated sodium channels in hyperexcitable neurons. This unique mechanism stabilizes neuronal membranes and reduces repetitive neuronal firing without broad CNS depression. The selective sodium channel modulation contributes to its favorable side effect profile compared to older anticonvulsants.
Neurologists recommend Lacolep for partial onset seizures and as adjunctive therapy for generalized epilepsy. It is particularly useful in patients who tolerate older anticonvulsants poorly. The medication can be used in patients aged 17 years and older with clinical benefit appearing within weeks of initiation.
Lacolep can be taken with or without food. Do not stop suddenly as this may cause seizure recurrence or status epilepticus. Gradual dose adjustments under medical supervision are essential. Improvement in seizure control typically appears within 2 to 4 weeks.
