What Experts Say
Lansoprazole belongs to a class of medicines called proton pump inhibitors, commonly referred to as PPIs. It works by blocking the enzyme responsible for acid production in the stomach lining, rather than simply neutralizing acid that has already formed. This mechanism gives more complete and longer lasting relief compared to older antacid formulas that only offer temporary comfort.
Doctors usually recommend taking this medicine on an empty stomach, ideally thirty minutes before breakfast, since food in the stomach can reduce how well it is absorbed. Most acid related conditions respond well to a short, structured course rather than continuous open ended use, and stopping treatment too early often allows symptoms to return within days.
Extended use beyond the recommended duration is generally discouraged without close medical supervision. Long term proton pump inhibitor use has been linked to lower magnesium and vitamin B12 levels, along with a higher risk of bone fractures in older adults, which is why periodic review by a qualified doctor is strongly advised.
