What Experts Say
Lansoprazole works by blocking the proton pump in stomach lining cells, cutting acid production for up to 24 hours after a single dose. Doctors across Pakistan often prescribe it on an empty stomach so the medicine reaches peak effect before food triggers acid release each morning of use.
Physicians recommend a course of 4 to 8 weeks for ulcer healing, extending therapy if endoscopy shows incomplete recovery. Long term use is monitored for vitamin B12 and magnesium levels, since prolonged acid suppression can reduce absorption of these nutrients over several months of continued therapy.
In patients on long term NSAID therapy, physicians often add lansoprazole preventively to lower the risk of gastric bleeding. Elderly patients and those with liver impairment may need dose adjustment, and doctors typically reassess the ongoing need for ulcer therapy every few months of active use.
