What Experts Say
Rifampicin remains one of the most important drugs used against tuberculosis worldwide, and experts consider it a cornerstone of standard treatment. It kills the bacteria quickly and helps shorten the overall course of therapy when combined with other anti-TB medicines.
One well known effect doctors always warn patients about is the harmless orange-red tinge it gives to urine, sweat, tears and even soft contact lenses. Healthcare providers explain this in advance so patients are not alarmed when it happens during treatment.
Because Rifampicin speeds up how the liver breaks down many other drugs, doctors routinely review a patient's full medication list, including birth control pills, before starting treatment. Regular liver function tests are also recommended throughout the course, especially for people with existing liver conditions.
