What Experts Say
Lindane works by being absorbed through the outer covering of lice and scabies mites. Once inside the parasite, it disrupts GABA gated chloride channels in the nervous system, causing uncontrolled nerve firing, paralysis, and death of the organism within hours of contact. This mechanism explains why a single correctly timed application can clear most infestations.
Because Lindane also crosses human skin and, to a smaller degree, the blood brain barrier, dermatologists reserve it as a second line option after permethrin or benzyl benzoate fail. Prolonged contact, broken skin, or use in infants and young children raises the chance of neurotoxic effects including seizures, which is why many prescribers now limit its role to resistant cases.
Correct technique matters more than repeat dosing. Guidelines call for one thin application left on for the exact time stated on the label, followed by thorough rinsing, since extending contact time beyond instructions increases systemic absorption without improving how well the parasites are killed.
