What Experts Say
Zolmitriptan belongs to the triptan class of medicines. It works by binding to serotonin 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors in the brain. This narrows the swollen blood vessels around the brain that trigger migraine pain and blocks the release of pain-signaling chemicals, calming the nerve pathways involved in a migraine attack.
Clinical evidence shows zolmitriptan works best when taken at the first sign of a migraine, rather than after the pain peaks. Most patients notice improvement within one to two hours. A second dose may help if symptoms return, but doctors advise against exceeding the recommended daily limit to prevent rebound headaches.
Because zolmitriptan narrows blood vessels, doctors avoid prescribing it to people with uncontrolled high blood pressure or existing heart disease. It should be used cautiously alongside antidepressants, since combining serotonin acting drugs can raise the risk of serotonin syndrome. A medical evaluation before starting treatment helps rule out these risks.
