How to use Lonacort Injection?
- Lonacort injection is given by a doctor or trained nurse only
- The vial must be shaken well before the dose is drawn up
- Deep injection into the upper outer buttock is the preferred site
- Injection into a vein or into the spine is never suitable
- Any joint being injected must first be confirmed free of infection
Contraindications
- Avoid in patients with an infection at or near the injection site
- Not suitable for patients with a widespread fungal infection
- Known allergy to triamcinolone or any part of this injection
- Should not be taken by anyone about to receive a live vaccine
Drug Interactions
- Insulin and diabetes tablets: blood sugar rises and doses may need raising
- Warfarin: blood thinning control becomes unpredictable
- Painkillers such as aspirin and diclofenac: stomach ulcer risk increases
- Rifampicin and phenytoin: the steroid clears faster and works less well
- Always tell your doctor about all medicines you are currently taking
Risks and warnings
- Infection risk: new fever or feeling unwell after the injection needs urgent review
- Blood sugar: diabetic patients need closer monitoring for several weeks
- Adrenal suppression: extra steroid cover may be needed during surgery or illness
- Live vaccines: these must be delayed while the effect of the injection lasts
- Injection site: dimpling and skin lightening can follow injection into the arm
- Repeated joint injections: too many injections damage the cartilage over time
- Eye pressure: long treatment needs checks for glaucoma and cataract
