What Experts Say
Raloxifene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator that mimics estrogen's protective effect on bone while blocking estrogen activity in breast and uterine tissue. This selective action is why physicians in Pakistan favor it for postmenopausal women who need bone protection but carry breast cancer risk factors.
Because raloxifene raises the risk of blood clots in the legs and lungs, doctors screen for a personal or family history of clotting disorders before starting therapy. Women who will be immobile for long periods, such as before major surgery or long travel, are usually advised to pause the medicine temporarily.
Bone density scans are typically repeated every one to two years to confirm the drug is working as expected. Calcium and vitamin D intake are reviewed alongside raloxifene therapy, since adequate mineral intake supports the medicine's bone protective effect.
