- Dose can be adjusted easily in small increments as a child grows
- Lower risk of tooth staining compared with older iron drop formulations
What Experts Say
The syrup form of iron polymaltose complex allows precise, weight based dosing, which is why it is commonly chosen for infants, young children and adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules of any kind at all.
As a non ionic iron compound, it is absorbed through active transport across the small intestine rather than passive diffusion. This mechanism limits the amount of free iron circulating in the gut, which reduces interaction with food and lowers the chance of staining teeth compared to older ferrous drops.
Clinicians usually reassess hemoglobin and ferritin levels after four to six weeks of consistent use. Liquid iron formulations are also easier to adjust in small increments, which matters when treating anemia in young children, during pregnancy, or in patients recovering from significant recent blood loss.
